The last time I visited Kabul was in 2015, just weeks before the Park Palace Hotel, where I often stayed, was attacked by the  Mad about Iowa shirt Taliban, killing 14 people. The situation there was already breaking down—it was no longer prudent to go—and it broke my heart; it still breaks my heart. Yet as work with the NGO wound down and funding fell away from Afghanistan, I was lucky to be able to continue my own work with the artisans of Kabul. I started commissioning embroidery from the women for a line of fabrics and clothing; I also work with a traditional weaver, the father of 11 girls. I’ve named my embroidered fabrics and stripes after women I admire: Storai, Hasina, Farima, Yalda, Maryam, Daneen. Others are cities: Kabul, Mazar, Herat.
