I got more in touch with my Jewish roots in college, as I began to attend campus celebrations and meet Jews—queer Jews, Jews of color, Jews who didn't agree with the U.S.'s support for Israel—who didn't fit the  Bigfoot the king Halloween is coming shirt mold. These days, filling my apartment with friends and stuffing them with chicken, challah, tzimmes and all the other traditional Jewish delicacies is one of my favorite Rosh Hashanah traditions; thanks to the COVID-19 pandemic, though, it wasn't possible this year, and as I stood in Zabar's, surrounded by the sights and smells of my childhood, I realized how much I'd been counting on that sense of community. Since I couldn't have a party, I did the next best thing: I bought a heroic amount of food from Zabar's, took the solitary train ride back to my apartment, got home, put on my Uggs—an emblem of Jewish American Princess culture I've never been able to give up—and rented You've Got Mail, losing myself in the oh-so-90's plot twists as my roommates flitted in and out of the living room (because as a Brooklyn millennial, you're never truly alone).

The last time I saw him, Phong and I visited him in the Rockaways and toured his new home and studio. We had lunch, and he gave us each a bottle of red wine with a label that he’d designed, which of course I saved. He was happy to see us but sad that he was having such trouble with his shows being canceled. I was doing an interview/conversation with him for something—I think a catalog for a show. When the  Larry Stylinson Is Real Deal With It Shirt show/catalog was canceled, he wanted Phong to publish it in The Brooklyn Rail, but that didn’t seem right, so I don’t think it was ever published. Time will reveal how he fits—or doesn’t fit—into the art history of this period, but there will always be an asterisk attached to his name. Likeness is one of the fundamental challenges of representational art.
