This morning, in lieu of a runway show, Miuccia Prada and Raf Simons, Prada’s newly appointed co-creative director, streamed a digital presentation of their first joint spring 2021 collection and then sat down for a conversation during which they fielded questions that had been crowd-sourced on Instagram. In addition to speaking about their unprecedented partnership and the new Prada uniform, Mrs. Prada also shared her time-tested wellness secret.  When asked “What do you drink in the morning to start your day?” the Milanese powerhouse, dressed demurely in a navy V-neck sweater and pleated white cotton skirt, responded with a smile: “Hot water,” she answered simply. “My mother told me, First hot water, and after, breakfast. It’s very healthy.” (Simons, on the other hand, confessed that he takes a different approach: “Me, I’m bad,” he said. “Coffee and the rest of the day Coca Zero.”)

The last time I saw him, Phong and I visited him in the Rockaways and toured his new home and studio. We had lunch, and he gave us each a bottle of red wine with a label that he’d designed, which of course I saved. He was happy to see us but sad that he was having such trouble with his shows being canceled. I was doing an interview/conversation with him for something—I think a catalog for a show. When the  Larry Stylinson Is Real Deal With It Shirt show/catalog was canceled, he wanted Phong to publish it in The Brooklyn Rail, but that didn’t seem right, so I don’t think it was ever published. Time will reveal how he fits—or doesn’t fit—into the art history of this period, but there will always be an asterisk attached to his name. Likeness is one of the fundamental challenges of representational art.
