She’s currently working on her next collection, whose muse will be Charlotte Maxeke, a political activist and the first Black woman to graduate from an American university, in 1901. “I am very hopeful,” says Khumalo. “Harriet Tubman’s story gives me hope that you can change the status quo. All I can do with my collections is speak about Tubman and other women like her in a compelling way that will engage people and get them to ask questions about Black culture and Black history. And hopefully more of us will be part of the change for good.”
