The last time I saw him, Phong and I visited him in the Rockaways and toured his new home and studio. We had lunch, and he gave us each a bottle of red wine with a label that he’d designed, which of course I saved. He was happy to see us but sad that he was having such trouble with his shows being canceled. I was doing an interview/conversation with him for something—I think a catalog for a show. Time will reveal how he fits—or doesn’t fit—into the art history of this period, but there will always be an asterisk attached to his name.
